Varanasi: The prestigious DP World PGTI NexGen–Varanasi Golf Tournament, carrying a total prize purse of ₹25 lakh, concluded successfully on Friday at the Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) Golf Course. The prize distribution ceremony was graced by Shri Ashutosh Pant, General Manager, BLW, who presented trophies and prize money to the winners.
Historic Achievement for Sunit Chourasia on NexGen Tour
Thirty-one-year-old Kolkata golfer Sunit Chourasia emerged as the champion after producing another remarkable performance. He returned a final-round score of 73 to finish with an overall score of six-under 204, securing a comfortable four-stroke victory over the field.
With rounds of 67, 64, and 73, Chourasia became the first player in the history of the DP World PGTI NexGen Tour to win three consecutive tournaments. Earlier this season, he claimed victories at the Alpha Sports Academy Golf Championship in Patna and the Vijay Kumar Memorial Tournament in Lucknow.
Victory Secures Main Tour Card for 2027 Season
The triumph earned Sunit prize money of ₹3,17,875. His total earnings for the season reached ₹10,04,393, helping him finish as the 2026 DP World PGTI NexGen Order of Merit Champion.
As a result, he has secured his playing card for the 2027 main DP World PGTI Tour, marking a significant milestone in his professional career.
Sunit Equals Long-Standing NexGen Record
Sunit, who is the nephew of renowned Indian golfer SSP Chawrasia, also equalled Maniram’s 2010 record of winning three tournaments in a single NexGen season.
The achievement highlights his consistency and dominance throughout the 2026 campaign.
Mukeem Ali and Souvik Nayak Finish Joint Runners-Up
Mukeem Ali of Mathura and Souvik Nayak of Kolkata finished tied for second place with identical totals of two-under 208.
Mukeem carded rounds of 67, 68, and 73, while Souvik returned scores of 69, 69, and 70 during the three-day championship.
BLW Golfer Hemant Yadav Impresses with Course-Record Performance
Local golfer and BLW employee Hemant Yadav delivered one of the standout performances of the event. He equalled the course record with a brilliant six-under 64 in the second round.
Despite a final-round 77, Hemant finished tied for fourth place at even-par 210 alongside Nikhil Sharma of Gurugram and Pawan Kumar of Delhi.
Pawan Kumar also matched the course record after producing a stunning six-under 64 in the final round.
Rajesh Kumar Gautam Retains Strong Position in Merit Rankings
Rajesh Kumar Gautam of Lucknow finished tied for 17th place with a total score of six-over 216. He earned ₹44,125 and retained second position in the NexGen Order of Merit standings with cumulative earnings of ₹7,25,185.
Sunit Reflects on Emotional Comeback and Future Goals
Speaking after his victory, Sunit Chourasia said that securing his card for the main tour was a major achievement. He described the past few weeks as special and expressed satisfaction that his hard work had paid off.
He also highlighted that returning successfully after a difficult injury phase made the achievement even more meaningful. Looking ahead, Sunit said his focus would be on performing consistently on the main tour and continuing to improve his game.
BLW Golf Course Strengthens Position as Premier Venue
The successful hosting of the championship further established the BLW Greens Golf Course among India’s leading professional golf venues. The event also enhanced Varanasi’s growing reputation on the national sporting map.
Several distinguished guests attended the prize distribution ceremony, including Shri Manish Kumar, President of the BLW Sports Association; Shri Anurag Kumar Gupta, Secretary of the BLW Golf Course; Shri Shishir Tyagi, Captain of the BLW Golf Course; Shri Sagar, Deputy General Manager; Shri Rajesh Kumar, Public Relations Officer, BLW; and Shri Prabhash Thakur, Director of Operations, PGTI, along with senior officials and golf enthusiasts.
